Maybe you grew up around unhealthy patterns and started repeating some of them without realizing it. Maybe something happened years ago that you thought you had moved past, but it still affects the way you think, respond, and treat the people around you.

If your life feels like a mess, you do not have to stay there. Jesus does not simply cover up our brokenness and tell us to move on. In Him, there is forgiveness, freedom, and real change!

1. Wounded People Are Everywhere

Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by people carrying pain, even when we cannot see it.

Some have been hurt by people they trusted, while others grew up around unhealthy behavior and began repeating it because it was all they knew. When we carry those wounds for a long time, they can start shaping how we see ourselves, how we treat others, and even how we see God.

Our wounds can help explain why we respond the way we do, but they do not excuse sinful behavior. At some point, we have to look at more than what someone else did to us and allow God to show us what is happening in our own hearts.

That is part of growing in Christ!

2. Recognizing What Is Beneath the Surface

Wounded people do not always look wounded because pain can show itself in many different ways.

It can hide behind anger, humor, isolation, defensiveness, or the need to control everything. We may struggle to trust people because we expect them to hurt us, become defensive when someone corrects us, or push away people who genuinely care because keeping our distance feels safer.

Sometimes we hold so tightly to what happened in the past that it becomes our reason for never moving forward.

Your pain may be real, and what happened to you may have truly been wrong. But God does not want the wounds of your past controlling the way you live today!

3. The Root Nobody Sees

Think about a tree that looks healthy above the ground. Its leaves are green, its branches look strong, and nothing seems wrong. But beneath the surface, something is happening to the roots.
Then a storm comes, and the tree falls.

The storm did not create the problem. It exposed something that had been growing underneath the surface.

Bitterness can work the same way. It often begins with a real wound, but when we allow bitterness to remain, it can begin affecting the way we think, speak, respond, and relate to the people around us.

Hebrews 12:15 warns us:
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”
Hebrews 12:15 NIV

God is not asking us to pretend our wounds never happened. He wants to deal with what those wounds are producing in our hearts.

4. Forgiveness Is Not Pretending It Never Happened

Corrie ten Boom understood how difficult forgiveness can be. During World War II, she and her family helped hide Jewish people from the Nazis. Corrie was eventually sent to a concentration camp, where she suffered greatly and where her sister Betsie died.

Years later, Corrie came face to face with a former concentration camp guard who had become a Christian and asked for her forgiveness. She knew what Scripture taught, but actually forgiving him was incredibly difficult. Corrie later wrote about asking Jesus to give her the strength to do what she could not do on her own.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened. It does not mean calling evil good, removing consequences, immediately restoring trust, or refusing to set healthy boundaries.
Instead, we release the debt and trust God with justice.

Paul writes:
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 NIV

We forgive because we have first been forgiven through Jesus Christ. When forgiveness feels impossible, we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us obey God even when our feelings are pulling us in another direction!

5. You Do Not Have to Stay Where You Are

The gospel does not leave us where it finds us.
Jesus came to save sinners, forgive us, reconcile us to God, and make us new. When we put our faith in Christ, we are made right with God because of what Jesus has done, not because we have somehow fixed ourselves.

And God continues working in us!

Romans 12:2 says:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2 NIV

God wants to change the way we think, the way we respond, and ultimately the way we live as we become more like Christ!

Whatever wound you are carrying, whatever bitterness has started growing in your heart, or whatever sinful patterns you keep falling back into, bring them before Jesus. Stay close to God and remain in His Word. Pray honestly, confess your sin, forgive when God calls you to forgive, and surround yourself with mature believers who will encourage you and speak biblical truth into your life.

You cannot change what happened yesterday, but you do not have to let yesterday control the way you live today.

Your past is part of your story, but it does not get the final word.
Jesus does.

There is forgiveness in Christ, there is grace for today, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, God is still changing lives!
